Stepping out of the shallow waters

Martha Olawale

Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. Psalm 42:7

I’ve watched different series on gold hunting for both land and sea and they are not tasks for the faint-hearted. I am not a treasure hunter by any means, but I believe the deeper you dig, the better your chances of finding priceless treasures. I also believe the best diamonds are not sourced from the surface of the earth but are buried deep within caves and have to be dug out. It takes more than a kitchen knife to reach the finest diamonds and much more than fishing in the reef to get a priceless pearl.

Growing in our walk with God requires digging deeper so He can continue to unveil Himself to us. It demands having a posture of surrender and allowing God to take you to places you never thought possible and making His unsearchable mysteries plain to you. It’s more than raising your hand to give God a high five on Sunday morning and waving goodbye at the door after church service.

There is more to walking with God than the few goodies you get in the shallow waters. The more you dig, the better it is. It may require a little more time for bible study, prayer, and growing with other believers but stepping out of the shallow waters demands we abandon our will for the Father’s will and lay down all our desires at the feet of Christ.

Psalm 42 reflects what most Christians go through in life. Our eternity is in Heaven, but we are not excused from the emotions that come with being humans. In a world where it seems impossible to walk through life without thorns thrown on your path with each step, God remains the only refuge. And although it may be painful to get deeper, the rewards you get from following God are unmatched.

Deep calls to deep and our desire to know God more is calling us out of the shallow waters and urging us to plunge into the deep. It’s urging us to leave our worries of getting wet behind and immerse head-deep in the things of God. There are mysteries to unveil beyond the reef of life and treasures beneath the waves. The deeper we go with God, the clearer life becomes, and we can reach all the treasures of life and godliness when we ride on our Savior’s back.
