That I may gain Christ

Martha Olawale

“But whatever were gains to me, I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.” Philippians 1:7-8

I’ve been in this world for a little bit, and I’ve seen wealth, health, fame, and glory fade with time. It seems like the more people have, the less worth they feel, leading them to seek more. And no matter what height we reach, it always comes down to the fact that only God can fill the missing piece at our core.

What is that thing that is worth more than what Christ brings to the table for us? If we live in a house that spans miles long and own all the world’s wealth, will it soothe our souls' longing for rest in its maker? If we hold a galaxy each to ourselves, will it reduce our need for a Savior?

All the misses of humanity lie in our inability to acknowledge God’s sovereignty and surrender in total abandonment. For Christ’s sake, it’s easy to lay it all down and follow where He leads because He is steadfast both in love and grace. What He gives, no one can give or take away.

To gain Christ, we must seek God’s heart and will in all our life pursuits because the value of life lies in Christ’s accomplished work at Calvary. And our hope only in eternity with Him. Our wealth is in knowing that we are on the Lord’s side and that the heart, although far from perfection in this mortal state, is panting after its maker with all its fiber.

I lay it all down: my hope, fear, strength, and weakness, that I may gain Christ. Paul said in Philippians 1:7, “I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ.” Knowing Jesus, tops all valor and conquests. He is my abundance, my enough, my all, and nothing can take the place of His Majesty in this world or the one unknown. The longer I walk with Him and rest on His shoulder, the more I want to be with Him.
