In the beginning, GOD!

Martha Olawale

“In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2

I had a conversation about the first verse of Genesis with a group of friends over two decades ago, and I still remember how it got us fired up. Even today, when I think about those first four words of the Bible, I shiver at the wholesomeness of God. That verse stirs something inside my soul that leads me to bow to my God and King. The perfect combination of words put me in my place and God where He belongs. It reminds me that before I was, He was. Before the oceans were, He was; before the stars were, He was, and He alone crowns the entire universe with His glory.

God was before the beginning of time and existed before the first existence. Think about it: the things that have taken humanity generations to know and marvel at - science, innovation, and all the discoveries He’s unveiling to us, are just minute details of His Majesty. He knew everything before the earth was formed and rules over it all.

There was none before God, and He reigns from the beginning of one galaxy to the end of another. He is the Alpha, the Omega, the beginning, and the end. Regardless of what I think of God and how far and wide my mind can try to box Him up, He is more significant, remarkable, and mightier than that.

Speaking of the greatness of God, David said in Psalm 24:1-2,” The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For He hath founded it upon the seas and established it upon the floods.” God took what was nothing and made something out of it. By speaking, He shaped the earth, dividing the waters from the waters and the daylight from the night light.

“In the beginning” started with GOD, and although He gave humanity authority over the things He made, we are not close to the comparison of who He is. I tremble at the glorious power of the Most High, for He is God and will always be God. I join the trillion stars and galaxies to stand in awe of my maker, and while my little mind can never fathom the depth and height of Him, every fiber of my being worships His majesty.
