Just because I can

Martha Olawale

“But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” Psalm 1:2

I did not like how the clerk answered me and in that split second of my heart’s response, I was more conscious of how to match her sarcasm with mine. I’ve blurted out the sharp answer before I had a prick in my heart. The Holy Spirit convicted me that I should know better. I am a child of God and sarcasm should not affect me the way I allowed her words to get to me. I immediately turned the table and continued the conversation in a more cordial manner despite my displeasure.

Although some might argue I have a right to answer wit for wit when someone disrespects me but walking with God should always make me conscious of the presence of my Father and honoring Him. I don’t have to succumb to my pride in moments of discomfort and misrepresent my faith. I am a child of God and I belong to a kingdom where the rules are different. My delight is in the law of the Lord and my greatest desire should be to please Him.

So many of us are living our lives in ways that are more appealing to us than to God. We’ve placed our priorities on “self-declared” thrones of importance that we forget the essence of our existence. Our actions and reactions should be in line with the message of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. We should treat people better than we do, listen more than we do, help more than we do, and just maybe endure discomfort more than we do before we give up. No matter what we face here on earth, it can never compare to what Christ went through to save us.

Until we cross that thin line between life and death, pleasing the flesh will always be at odds with pleasing God, and what we feed more wins more. We should not respond to things based on our flesh’s demand but on how God wants us to. Just because we can, does not mean we should. Check with Heaven’s script before you flip to the next chapter because our hearts’ desires can only measure on Heaven’s scale when it continuously seeks to honor God.
