Thanksgiving: A million and one reasons

Martha Olawale

“Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.  Praise the Lord, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” Psalm 103:1-5

Although we might be surrounded by waves threatening to drown us, there are a million and one reasons to be grateful to God. His love speaks through the sun that shines every morning and the moon that lights our sky at night. His grace breaks through our imperfections and His mercy cuts through our limitations.

When we think of all that is happening in the world, we might lose sight of the need to acknowledge the creator still holding it all together. Even in the presence of guilt, His mercy cuts through. God is the only constant and generation after generation, life and godliness have prevailed over evil in the world. He has the world in His hands and no matter how far we’re stretched, He won’t let go.

The God of the universe is mindful of humanity and regardless of our circumstances, God is good. It is by His grace we are sustained. He is ever faithful and dependable, and His love endures forever. When we think of His goodness, we are reminded of the nights He wipes our tears away; the ditches He digs us out of; the mountains He levels before us; the rivers He parts for us to cross; the roads He paves for us to walk through; the heights He helps us reach, and the many battles He keeps winning for us. So, despite all oppositions, for a million and one reasons, we are grateful to the Most High God.
