How is that working out for you?

Martha Olawale

“But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:14

Thinking through a simple scenario. Two extremely thirsty men came across a well but could only draw from it one at a time. The first man went to the well and pulled his cup of refreshing water, quenching his thirst. He went to his friend excitedly, telling him about his satisfaction after drinking water from the well. The friend looked at him and said he didn’t believe water was in the well and would not try to draw from it. He ignored the obvious change in his friend and dismissed his plea.

Looking at his dying friend, the satisfied man urged him to try getting his share of water from the well, citing he had nothing to lose trying, but the friend refused. He had no alternative to quenching his thirst, yet he turned deaf ears to his friend’s plea. We can all agree that If the thirsty man dies, it’s not his friend’s fault because he was offered to drink from the same well.

Wisdom demands that an empty, hopeless soul accept the gift of salvation Christ offers; if it doesn’t, that’s not God’s fault. I would ask a thirsty man or woman who refuses to embrace the saving grace from Calvary’s flow: "How is that working out for you?” Would you rather lose it all when you can have it all?

Lay your haughtiness aside and come to the well. A well that has continued to satisfy many spanning thousands of years is worth the try. Like the warriors of old and all the followers of the cross before me, I drank from it and am fully satisfied. Your pride or the money in your account cannot give you peace or buy you eternity. And your bitterness and belief in nothingness can never satisfy you. Don’t die of thirst; draw from the well of life.

Jesus said, ‘Whoever,’ meaning ‘anyone’ who drinks the water He gives will never thirst again (John 4:14).  Everyone falls into the category of anyone, and I urge you to draw from the gift of salvation Christ offers and see if you won’t be filled. Think of it this way: you have nothing to lose trying Jesus but everything to lose if you don’t.
