The immaculate glory of today

Martha Olawale

“This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it..” Psalm 118:24

We often place a massive demand on our history to determine our present and future outcomes and, in turn, reduce the immaculate glory of today. While our past plays a significant role and is relevant for today, and our today is vital for our tomorrow, it’s crucial to learn to build from them to avoid the pitfalls of yesterday. Although life might not always pan out as planned, things left to chance have a greater risk of failure.

Like any human, I’ve made many mistakes and continue to, but they don’t define me; God does. Don’t give in to the failure chants ringing in your ears; if you have today, tomorrow can be better. Just because you are swamped with lies does not mean you will fail. Remember that the story of one is not the story of all. Yesterday has passed, and we must give today a fighting chance to experience a better tomorrow by aligning our feet with God’s footsteps.

Yes, despite the failed marriages all around you, yours can be exceptional, and despite the many vices the younger generation faces, your children can be taught of God. If you throw in the towel, telling yourself, “What’s the point,” you will deny your tomorrow the fruits from the seed that needs to be planted today.

I approach everything I hope for with a sense of intentionality, minding the daily demands more than yesterday's echoes. My parents’ marriage might not have been the best in the world, but I’m building on the beauties and the misses, and I hope my children build better marriages from learning from mine. To see what I want in my marriage, I must invest daily. Also, to achieve the closeness I hope for between my children and their walk with God, I must be mindful of creating an environment for them to develop and nurture growth daily.

I’ve realized that while God’s intent is for me to have a great future rooted in hope (Jeremiah 29:11), there is no wand waving by my creator to make my dreams come true. By His design, we all have a part to play in achieving what we hope for in life. Although perfection is an unending process, God has woven the ability to make things better within each redeemed soul and the possibility to make today better than yesterday. So, learn to sit at Christ’s feet to make today glorious because while you can’t do something about yesterday, today is another day to make things better for tomorrow.
