The Lord’s Portion

Martha Olawale

“For the Lord's portion is his people…” Deuteronomy 32:9a

The majestic view of the ocean from the hotel window was captivating. I could hardly look away from the waves rising and falling and the sea of white sands. It was so beautiful and mesmerizing to watch the endless blue water command so much power yet make life seem easier. My few days of vacation were almost over but the majesty of the ocean stays with me forever.

I love the ocean, the mountains, and all the things that remind me of God’s greatness and creative ability. How can something so massive and endless as the ocean be perfectly separated from land? How are the Iroko trees formed, and the mountains carved with such details? When we think about all the planets and galaxies and the millions of stars that light up our world every night, there is sobering awe for the God behind it all.

The twenty-four elders in Revelations 4:11 said “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure, they are and were created.” You can argue about His existence, but He speaks through the waves of the seas, the trickle of the rain, and the rustle of the wind.

Despite the unfathomable awe of all of God’s creation, the Lord’s portion is His people, and He delights in us. Of all His majestic creations, humanity holds a special place in the heart of the Father. A million sparkles in the sky and the loudest roars of the sea are no match for the teardrops of a man or woman walking with God. His love for His children is infinite and His commitment to them is everlasting.

Man is extraordinary, created by God, in the image of God, and for the glory of God. The shooting stars or blazing sun cannot compare to the intricacies of the god-like man. The Psalmist says “Know ye that the Lord, He is God; it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves. We are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.” Psalm 100:3.
